Let It Snow!

He gives snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes. ~Psalm 147:16

Yes!  We finally get snow!  Our last decent storm occurs in 2017.

In 2020, we do get enough of the white stuff for granddaughter, Virginia, to enjoy for a while, but it melts away all too quickly.

This time, our snow is predicted to begin falling around 7:00 a.m. Friday of last week.  I'm an early riser, so Danny insists that I wake him should this forecast be accurate.  For once, the weather gurus get it right!  Watching the snow descend softly, silently, and witnessing its rapid accumulation is magical, indeed.

This last daytime shot is what our driveway looks like.  We are at home for the long haul!

At night, Danny captures the wonder of icicles clinging to branches, illuminated by outdoor lights.

Saturday, the cloud cover and low temperatures keep melting to a minimum.  Sunday, however, the sun makes its return, and oh, how the ice-coated trees glisten and gleam gloriously.

As I write this on Sunday afternoon, I can hear the persistent drip, drip, drip of ice and snow as the sun travels in its arc across the clear blue sky.  Our fabulous snow days may not have lingered long, but our amazing memories of it will.

Amen!

  2. Want to trade? Our 15-18" are still around and we got another 3-4" less than a week later. Graciously, it has started melting (I'm all for a slow melt so we don't flood). but the temp when I got in my car this morning at 4:45 to come to the office was 7 degrees. Yeah...it was cold. But I also know that the ONE who made everything in the beginning continues to do His masterwork today. Enjoy! (but I will still trade). :)

    1. If we got the kind of snow that you do, Bill, we'd never be able to leave the house - Yikes!!! We have the Doomsday Driveway when we get any kind of snow or freezing rain, so we always have to plan ahead. So no, I won't trade!

  3. Growing up in New Orleans, I saw snow twice before college - I was 7 and 12, respectively (in New Orleans, you remember when it snows). And it was like magic. Living in St. Louis that last 44 years, the first snow feels like magic. But only the first one.

    1. I hear you loud and clear, Glynn, about those few and far between snow events in the South. We did live in Massachusetts for one year when my dad took a Sabbatical, and had more snow than I could have ever dreamed was possible. As a 12-year-old at the time, it didn't get old, but at my age now? Yes, I'd be so over it.

  4. Beautiful photo of the flag and snow. Isn't it amazing how the snow brightens our hearts and we are simply in awe of it's beauty? Glad you all were able to have a few days of the glistening white snow. Looks more could be on it's way for this coming weekend...

    1. Since Danny is a weather buff, he's already noted that we could be hit with winter weather again, Shug. We just hope we can make it to church this coming Sunday - between sickness and then the snow, we haven't been able to attend since Christmas Eve. Yes, snow might be cold, but it does warm my heart when I see it.

  9. Well, if I can't experience this up close and personal, your images are the next best thing to being there!
That solitary bench, in particular, is so poignant -- I'm at a loss to define it right now, but yet I'm stirred. Danny's captures of the frozen raindrops is wonderful ... frame worthy!

  13. Lovely photos, Martha! After 40 years of living in Florida, I'm glad to be back home in the Midwest where I grew up. I love the snow, but when it interferes with our ability to get where we need to be, then I wish--NOT to be back in Florida, but that it could evaporate quickly, at least off the roadways and sidewalks!

    1. Thanks to Danny for these great photos, Nancy. We both love the snow when it happens here, but always have to plan carefully as our driveway is impassable when it falls thickly and heavily. Forty years in Florida? It's a great and beautiful state, but I sure wouldn't want to live there year round.

  14. Your pictures are lovely! I'm a fan of looking at snow and the few snow storms we've had have been perfect. We've had a few inches -- very pretty -- and then it was gone by the next day. As I've gotten older I've gotten so concerned about icy sidewalks and falling. To think I've walked thousands of miles on icy sidewalks, but I was a whole lot younger and didn't have an artificial hip.

    1. I don't have an artificial hip, Carol, but my balance issues have been affected ever since I was hospitalized for pneumonia in 2022. The older we get, the more careful we have to be with things like ice and snow. Had I been 10 years younger, I would have been out there trying to build a snowman - LOL!

  23. What a beautiful depiction of the magic of winter! The imagery of icicles clinging to branches and the sun making the ice-coated trees gleam sounds truly enchanting. It's those moments of quiet beauty, like hearing the drip of melting snow, that stay with us long after the snow has melted. Your words capture the peace and wonder of nature so well. Even though the snow days may not have lasted, your memories will shine just as brightly.

  24. Oh Martha, those were wonderful pictures! You really did have some beautiful snow and ice in the trees! I imagine you might get some more this week? We might even have some snow flurries here where we live in the much deeper south than you! I'm sure it won't last long or accumulate, but it will be fun to see it if it happens. Please stay safe and warm!! Thank you for sharing the beauty with us!

    1. I'm so gratified to know that you enjoyed the photos Danny took of our recent snow and ice. It was truly a winter wonderland for us. Danny has been tracking the next storm and it does look like you all could certainly get some unusually low temperatures and frozen precipitation, and I'll be looking forward to seeing how your new camera captures anything you do get at Still Waters Pond. Our Air Force son, Giovanni, is in the Florida panhandle and my brother is in Brunswick, GA. They could both see more snow than we will up our way! Exciting and unusual times, for sure. Blessings!

To err on the side of caution, we will be cancelling two doctor's appointments scheduled as even the mere appearance of ice makes leaving our house impossible due to our steep driveway.
