Renovation

He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. ~Mark 8:31

March, as most of you already know, is one of the busiest months we've had in a while.  With the kids coming for a week's visit, there are so many preparations and planning for feeding and entertaining the family troops.  We are so pleased, too, that we can show them our most recent, and necessary for us, home improvement project that is finished and ready by the time they arrive.

What is this project, you ask?  A complete renovation of our master bathroom!  Believe me, this is NOT a decision that Danny and I make lightly.  It takes lots of research in choosing a reliable company, not to mention the timeliness of the actual renovation itself.  We feel so fortunate to contract with a local, family-owned and operated bath company with fantastic reviews and stellar customer service.

Their pleasant, knowledgeable sales rep shows up to our home right on time so we can see samples of what we can choose in the way of shower insert, fixtures such as handlebars, which we need, believe me, showerhead options, and new water-resistant flooring.  She isn't pushy or forceful in her presentation, and allows us ample time to pick and choose from seemingly endless styles and colors.  Danny and I easily agree on what we want for this new shower; being married for twenty years (this April 2nd), we know each other's tastes pretty well, if I say so myself.

And why now to accomplish this renovation?  Honestly, we aren't getting any younger, and would like to stay here in our home for as long as the Lord allows.  Danny recently hurts his knee to the point where stepping over the edge of our old-fashioned tub is a daily painful experience.  I, too, have had my fair share of balance issues, so this decision, while an expensive one, makes perfect sense to us.

Here is a photo of our old bathroom:

And here's what it looks like after the remodeling is complete, and freshly painted:

Wow!  What a difference, right?

Yes, our bathroom is completed in one day, as promised.  However, there is a catch:  We have to wait three days before we can use the shower insert to make sure everything has time to set and dry correctly.  Immediately, I'm reminded of the Easter story, the one we will soon be celebrating, the glorious day when God the Father resurrects His beloved Son, Jesus, from the dead.

Waiting three days, taken in the context of our bath remodel, seems unbelievably easy in light of the pain, anguish and confusion that Jesus' followers must have suffered in those dark days between the Lord's death on a cross and His resurrection.  A three-day span must have felt interminable for them.  Consumed by grief and fear, they forget what Jesus has promised them would happen on that blessed third day.

But we, as Christ-followers today, know how the story ends.  And we give thanks and praise to God for the grace and mercy He shows to us through Jesus' conquering, once and forever, death and the grave.  May we all celebrate the renovation of us all from the inside out on Easter and always.

Amen!

  1. This must be the day of bathroom renovation (or at least thinking about it). We talked about it and had some people look back in November before my knee surgery, but really didn't have enough time and didn't want to pull the plug on the money. So we put it off. We are still talking about it. :) it may come closer to becoming a reality though. Waiting three days? Hmmm. I can go to the Y but the two ladies in the house may have something to say about that. As for 3 days? Excellent application. Amen

    1. Good to know that you have been considering a similar project at your home, Bill. We have a second bathroom where we could shower, and the toilets were never out of commission, so it was less of a hardship than you might think. No, it isn't cheap to have one put in, but we're enjoying it so much. I'm so glad you liked the three-day analogy, too.

    1. Thanks so much, Victor, for the happy anniversary wishes! Oh, that it could be possible for our new shower to not just get us clean on the outside, but wash away our troubles, too. But, we do know the Living Water who can do just that.

  3. Wonderful analogy about the 3 days of waiting for the "empty tomb"...and also for your wonderful new shower to be ready to use, which, by the way, is beautiful! What a blessing that must be for you both! I have wanted to do something similar, but we just can't quite see our way clear financially to do so yet. We do have a walk-in shower already, but there is a little step up and over, and it is also a bit confining. Maybe someday. Oh, Happy 20th Anniversary to you both tomorrow! How wonderful! May God bless you with many more happy and healthy years together!! And yes, Easter is coming! Hallelujah! Christ IS risen!!

    1. I'm so glad you liked the three-day analogy here today, Pamela. And I hear you about the cost - Let's just suffice it to say that we had to make sure we put money aside so we could afford to do this. At least, as you mentioned, you have a walk-in shower already, except for the little lip you mentioned. That's where handlebars come in so handy. We had those before so we could feel safer in the shower with a regular-sized tub. Thanks for the great wishes for a happy anniversary, too!

  4. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH love the new shower, smiles. We have a walk in, but there is a little step into it, and it is quite small, one day we will have a "carwash" lol. Wishing you a beautiful day.

  5. A few years ago, we undertook a home renovation -- the master bath, the first floor powder room, new carpeting, and (dramatic pause) the kitchen. The kitchen was literally gutted. We operated the microwave in the basement and the coffee pot in a spare bedroom on the second floor. We ate out a lot. The master bath was unusable for about a month, but we had a second bathroom. It was still stressful. But we got through it.

    1. That certainly does sound stressful, Glynn. What a huge undertaking! I'm sure, though, that looking back, you're both glad you did that while you could and are now enjoying those decisions.

  7. I love how you connected this renovation with the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Waiting 3 days can feel like an eternity...Can you imagine the grief and the hopelessness that the disciples must have felt? BUT...waiting was part of the plan. Happy April Martha... your new shower looks so nice..

    1. Waiting certainly was in God's plan, Shug, and I'm so glad you liked the analogy here. On the Saturday before each Easter, I try to envision the pain and hopelessness Jesus' disciples suffered in that waiting time. I know that's why this thought about the renovation came to mind at that point.

And what a beautiful gift in the reveal. I've been seeing more and more of these shower renovations online ... wishin' and hoping (like that old song). I can so relate to the reasons you cite for the transformation; perhaps we need to think about bumping it higher on our Possible Project list.

    1. I'm so glad you liked the analogy here today, Myra! Yes, we saw this remodel as a need rather than a want, and as I said, we really want to stay in this home for as long as we are able. If Tom and you decide to get one done in your home, I'd advise going with a local vendor that others in your area have used. Those big companies that we see advertised aren't always your best bet. Thanks, too, for the anniversary wishes!

  13. That new shower is gorgeous, Martha! Three days sounds so short, but when you're waiting for something, time seems to stretch out. (Maybe that's not such a bad thing at our age!!) The poor disciples weren't even bouyed by anticipation as they endured Friday through Sunday. They weren't expecting Jesus to rise from the dead even though he'd predicted this outcome. Nor did they believe the women who saw Jesus "because their words seemed to them like nonsense" (Luke 24:10-11 NIV). The disciples still had much to learn!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Oh, yes, Nancy, the disciples had so much to learn, and so do we. Any extra days God chooses to give us at our respective ages is a gift, one we should give thanks to Him for every day a new morning dawns. I'm so glad you loved the shower, too. We feel confident that we've made the right decision for us at this time and place.

  18. thecontemplativecat here. A lot can happen in 3 days! I have a tee that says this and has simple illustration of a crown of thorns, the cross, and then the open tomb. I have looked at our m.brm bathroom and wondered about it. To do what you did (and beautifully) would require some moving a huge oval tub and existing shower. It would be a mess. Yours looks excellent.

    1. Oh, Susan, I would love to have a shirt like yours! I will have to do some shopping on Amazon, for sure, to see if I can find one like it. It all depends on how much chaos you can take when replacing a bath/shower area. Ours was minimal, and that was such a blessing. As Danny and I are both in our 70s, this seemed like the sensible thing to do.

  25. I relate to so much you write, Martha, and the lateness of my response is connected to your mention of how full the month of March has been for you and Danny. As you know, we just returned from two weeks in God's "homeland" and aside from it being a wonderfully exhausting trip, Diane and I (along with over half of our fellow pilgrims) contracted some kind of upper respiratory plague and we've both been sick since returning home. I've finally turned a corner, but Diane is still having a hard time with it.
In any case, I join the rest of your fans in congratulating you and Danny on your renovation--what a relief it is (I know from experience) when.a major project like that is finally done. May God grant you guys a wonderful time of decompression and rejoicing over much anticipated improvements in such an important area in your home. And may God bless you both as you continue to prepare your hearts for the activities and celebrations await you on Easter weekend.
