Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. ~Matthew 24:35
I've always loved word games. Whether it's old-fashioned Scrabble or Jumble puzzles, I find them all to be delightful pastimes with the added bonus of stimulating my brain at the same time.
Several months ago, I discover this free Five Across word game on the Fox News website. I'm immediately hooked! I have to admit that it takes me some time and practice before I actually develop a strategy to better tackle the daily puzzle, and those tactics aren't foolproof by any means. Still, it's a rarity for me NOT to guess the word well within the six lines given.
Here's the puzzle I solve this past Saturday.
Notice that on my first try, I use as many vowels as possible. This will not only tell me if the vowel is present, but automatically eliminates the wrong choices. The latter will be greyed out, vowels and consonants that are there but in the wrong place will show up on a brown background, while correct letter placements are displayed in green.
As you can see, I really luck out on my second try as three of the five letters are in their right location. But do you see, too, that it takes me until the next to the last try to actually get the winning word? Yes, even when I have this kind of advantage, I can still come up against linguistic roadblocks.
Have I ever solved the word on the first try? Nope! The second? Only once, and what a lucky fluke that was! Most of the time, as my stats show, it takes me at least four tries to realize success.
Here's my better try on Sunday.
This also illustrates the brown background of a letter in the wrong place in the puzzle. I solve it in three tries!
The only drawback? Just one Five Across is offered per day. Probably good for a word nerd like me who would easily become addicted to playing game after game after game instead of meeting the real demands of the day. I'd certainly develop a chronic case of Five Across Fever!
As much fun as I have with these word challenges, like all else in heaven and earth, these will eventually pass away. But what a comfort it is to know that the words of Jesus will never be obsolete. They are eternal and eternally true. And for all who believe in Him and His saving grace when God calls you home, rest assured that you will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Amen!

Dear Martha, I do love word games and the only ones I play are in crossword puzzle books...alone. I don't play games on the internet or even in blog challenges, because I use the internet for doing and following blogs, email and web searches, not for games.
ReplyDeleteThe words of God will never fade, and for this I am really grateful.
Thank you 😊 🙏 so much for sharing, dear friend. God bless you.
I admire you for tackling those crossword puzzles, Linda. I never had the patience for them which sounds silly since I do love words so much. And yes, I'm so grateful for the everlasting Word of God.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
I enjoy word games and puzzles, although I do not put them on my phone or computer... I get addicted quite easily to be honest. And yes, the Word of the Lord are eternal!
ReplyDeleteI hear you about not putting word games on your computer or phone, Marja. That's why I haven't succumbed to Wordle. Doing my puzzle once a day is perfect for me. Let's celebrate the Word that will never pass away.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
I am not very good at word games and anagrams. Thank you for a thoughtful ending to your post.
ReplyDeleteGod bless always.
You write so well, Victor, that I would have thought you'd enjoy word games. Glad you liked the ending here.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
I've never been much of a word nerd as you call it. I like playing games like backgammon and Othello, but Jo doesn't so they go largely unused. I do like Scrabble but then again, it goes largely unused as well. But take me to the Word that never changes and I can stay for hours! "His Word is a lamp unto my feet and a Light unto my path."
ReplyDeleteI, too, can spend hours in the Word, Bill, especially now that I have that beautiful, large-print Bible! His Word is most definitely a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Still, the word games are a great and harmless entertainment when my brain needs distraction.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
I’m thankful for the powerful words of Jesus
ReplyDeleteAmen to that, Diana, I am, too!
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Word Jumble and crosswords fans here.
ReplyDeleteI never could get "good" at crosswords, Glynn, so I admire y'all for that. Jumbles are the best as the "punny" answers are like "Dad jokes."
DeleteGrace and blessings!
I like word games too-Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to know that you do, Christine.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
The only “Word” game I’ve been doing this past week has been homiletics for Daniel 7&8. 😉 Oy vey!
ReplyDeleteNow, that's certainly a challenging word game, Debby. Good for you!
DeleteGrace and blessings!
This is a little like Wordle, not exactly. I love games too. However, exactly like you wrote - these will NOT last forever, but the WORD OF GOD WILL!
ReplyDeleteAmen, Sandie! Yes, God's Word is forever and ever.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Quordle sounds like a fun challenge, Lulu. I just might have to look it up.
ReplyDeleteGrace and blessings!
Hi dear Martha,
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention that yes, I do crossword puzzles...but I like the variety, such as Cryptograms, etc., in the Dell and Penny Press Variety books. The ones I don't like or do are Sudoku and the difficult brain teasers, as these give me a headache! I like a challenge, but not one that stresses me out. LOL! :)
Oh, Linda, I can sympathize with that completely! Anything dealing with numbers, like Sudoku, loses me before I even begin to try. I've never been good with numbers, but I'm glad to be complemented by Danny's analytical and mathematical mind when I need that. Since my dad died with Alzheimer's, and so did his mother and siblings, I'm overly conscious of keeping my mind active and engaged as much as I can.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
These types of puzzles, usually give me a headache and leads to frustration but great on you for being able to do them
ReplyDeleteJo-Anne, as I always say, to each his own. If this isn't your cup of tea, so be it. But the most important and enduring message I want to convey is the timeless and eternal importance of Jesus' Word that will never pass away.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
thecontemplativecat I am always doing something like puzzles. Right now I am hooked on Makeover Empire.
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with that game, Susan, but if it makes you happy, then it is a boon for you! Puzzles? I've never had the patience for the jigsaw type. But any activity that keeps our brains active is a bonus.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Amen!
ReplyDeleteAs a dedicated Wordle fan, this looks right up my alley. I always feel a little let down when I've no more "free" chances; now, I've got two!
Hooray, Myra! Yes, the Five Across on the Fox News site is absolutely free, so that's a winner right there. Let me know if you decide to check it out.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Martha that looks like fun. I used to download various word games but I would uninstall it because I would spend too long playing them. Thank you for visiting my blog!💗
ReplyDeleteI hear you, Regina. I used to have solitaire on my computer, but got rid of that ages ago due to being sucked in by it constantly. I certainly do enjoy your blog and will continue to visit you there.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Thank God for the Words 🙏🏽
ReplyDeleteAmen, Cloudia! May His Word always inspire the words we use a writers each and every day.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Martha, I had no idea Fox News had something like this on their website. How fun and stimulating for your mind. I'm a lover of words and God's Word. Thankful His Word is eternal. God bless!
ReplyDeleteI'm so thankful for God's eternal Word, too, Karen, as you well know. I'm having so much fun with this Five Across challenge each day as I try to keep my mind sharp. As I have a family history of Alzheimer's in my dad's side of the family, I'm always looking for ways to develop more brain stimulation activities in which to be engaged.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Our daughter introduced me to Wordle--a very similar game. It's fun to compare notes with her every now and then. With you, Martha, I'm glad it's only one puzzle per day or my competitive streak would "demand" I complete every one!
ReplyDeleteOh, boy, Nancy, I hear you loud and clear on this one. Like you, I'm competitive and would just keep going to see how much more I could do. So nice to know that you can compare this experience with your daughter from time to time. Just another beautiful reason to connect with family.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
I don't do word games, but do enjoy Sudoku and CrossMath. You are an author... I'm an accountant! LOL I enjoyed your post, Martha!! xo
ReplyDeleteOh, Terri, how I wish I was better at math at times, because Sudoku looks both intriguing and challenging. Virginia, our oldest granddaughter, has a gift for math that did NOT come from me - LOL! And her mom is also really adept at Sudoku, but because of her busy schedule, can't play much any more. By the way, the Fox News site also offers a daily Sudoku game for all you amazing accountants out there. Let me know if you decide to try it out for free.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
I do word puzzles at times, but I love sudoku of all kinds. 16 x16 puzzles and irregular puzzles are my favorites. I enjoyed reading about your love of the word search game.
ReplyDeleteHugs and Blessings
As I told Terri above, I'm sadly deficient when it comes to number games, Jim, so I really admire your ability in Sudoku. I'm glad you enjoyed this post.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Great article and good blog. Have a nice day ok
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Vicky!
DeleteGrace and blessings!
My Sam loves puzzles and works one everyday. Enjoyed this post Martha...One thing for sure is that we never have to second guess God's word. His word stands and His promises do too.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to know that Sam enjoys word puzzles, too, Shug. And I'm so grateful for God's Word that stands forever as truth for all of us.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Martha I adore word games too...scrabble...word wipe, boggle, etc. Lovely reminder of how permanent the words of our Lord are - forever and ever. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteAnother word nerd? I love it, Debbie! And yes, God's sure and everlasting Word is always, always the best.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Olá, Martha
ReplyDeleteEsses jogos devem ser interessantes, são ótimos para a mente, gosto de fazer palavras cruzadas. É gratificante saber que a Palavra do Senhor permanece para sempre, bjs querida.
These games are really helpful in keeping our minds alert, Lucinalva, and that's part of the reason I began doing them in the first place. I hope they're helping! But there is nothing better or grander than the Word of God, is there?
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Oh my, Martha--I can't believe I'm this late getting a response out to you for this intriguing piece. We've had some family and medical issues going on (not crisis level, but time consuming and distracting) and our routines and schedules were victimized. Anyhow, I'm really sorry and will try not to be such a slug next time. Meanwhile, I hope you'll forgive me and please don't kick us out of your tribe.
ReplyDeleteNow, regarding your fascinating post about the word game, it's one oi the few things we don't seem to share the same passion for. Diane and I have never been "puzzle people." We've been puzzling at times, no doubt but neither of us have ever gotten involved in that sort of thing. It probably explains why my brain doesn't function as well as it should. Come to think of it, maybe that's why I'm so late responding to your piece! I've been stricken with "Word-Puzzle Deficient Dementia." I'm going to have to contact Fox and get on board. Maybe I can reverse the damage and never be late responding to you ever again. Ahh... hope feels good. :)
But late or not, we love you around here, dear sister, and praise God for getting to share these visits to your home and to hear the inspiring insights God gives you.
No worries, Ron, about being late to the party - ever! I'm so sorry to hear about your medical issues that required immediate attention, but as we age, it seems, those happen more frequently. Please know that I more than understand this dilemma as we have faced the same here many times. And I don't expect all my readers to be on board with my likes and dislikes, either. Danny doesn't care for word puzzles, either, so there you go!
DeleteGive my love to Diane!
Grace and blessings!
This is so true. The words of God will never fade away. Congratulations upon solving the puzzle. Glad you have found a new hobby to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Brenda! Yes, God's Word will never pass away, and for that, I'm eternally grateful.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
I smiled because I have NOT allowed myself to get hooked into any of these games but like you would have to find one only offered once a day. Good spiritual lesson too.
ReplyDeleteOh, boy, do I hear you, Jean! I do like that I can only play one game per day as it does keep me focused on other things. Glad the spiritual lesson rang true for you.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Have a beautiful day my friend.
ReplyDeleteRegine
You, too, Regine!
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Looks challenging but good for the brain.
ReplyDeleteIt can be very challenging, Barbara. Why I even work word puzzles is to keep my brain nimble and alert. So important as we age.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
I love word games too! My husband and I spend a few minutes together every night doing the New York Times word games: Wordle, mini-crossword, etc. It's good for our brains and also great fun. :) Glad you found a word game you love too - and yes, I'm glad they're only one per day because I'm addicted too. lol.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to spend time together with those word games, Lisa! It is definitely good for our cognitive health and I'm so conscious of that since my dad passed away with Alzheimer's as did his mother and two siblings. Danny's not a word guy, but we keep our dual brains going with our nightly backgammon games.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
O bom de adorar louvar ao Senhor Jesus é que não ficará somente nessa terra. Teremos a oportunidade de adorá-lo eternamente. Deus te abençoe rica e abundantemente.
ReplyDeleteYou said it all here, Luiz! Our Lord is forever and always.
