The Coming of the Lord

He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon."  Amen.  Come, Lord Jesus. ~Revelation 22:20

The Lord is coming, always coming.  When you have ears to hear and eyes to see, you will recognize him at any moment of your life.  Life is Advent; life is recognizing the coming of the Lord. ~Henri Nouwen

As we enter the highly anticipated season of Advent, have we quieted our souls and prepared room in our hearts for the imminent coming of the Lord?  Are we, as Nouwen states, recognizing Jesus' presence not just in this season, but in all the ordinary moments of our lives?

And if we're not living in a perpetual state of expectancy, then why aren't we?  What would it take for us to do so?

Advent invites us to slow down, to sit in stillness, to allow that feeling of waiting with expectancy to fill us once again.  Is that easy to do in the hustle-bustle of the holiday?  No, but we should make every effort to accept God's invitation to come away with Him for a while and find rest as we prepare for the miracle of miracles, the birth of our Savior.

My prayer for you, my friends, is that you will heartily embrace this season with its promise of hope, joy, peace, and love.  The coming of the Lord Jesus is right around the corner.

Amen!

Do you have any special Advent traditions?  Please share in the comments.

  1. Another excellent post. Forgive me for repeating myself, Martha; but this is exactly the kind of post I envisage for the new "Christian Focus" Blog should it get off the ground. Thank you so much.

    God bless you.

  2. I don't have any traditions per se except I do try to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" at least once. Spiritually, I try to use different devotional books to help me focus on the birth of Christ, especially since my preaching will not focus on that this December. I do need to slow down though. I hope to do that.

  5. My goal is to always feel a gentle breath during this season...I think of it as an invitation to slow down, sit quietly and make room for hope in my heart. It is hard for many of us, but waiting isn't wasted time...it can be sacred as we lean into peace and practice gratitude. Great post Martha.

  11. Oh, I love this post, especially since I am being "forced" to rest and come away from the noise of the crowd for a while since I have pneumonia. God allows these things for a reason...and He knew I needed to have a slower start to this season...your reminders here to pause and remember why we celebrate Christmas...and look forward to the soon return of the Lord...help me to appreciate even more that God is right here now, speaking to me and helping me to slow down and keep my eyes fixed on Him. Thank you. I needed this reminder. I love the Advent season, and it's time for me to refocus.

    1. God does have His ways of meeting our needs before we even know how to ask, doesn't He? I'm sure your case of pneumonia is exactly what He planned, Pamela - not too sick, but sick enough where you know you have to intentionally slow down and make time for Him. I'm glad this was a positive reminder for you today.

  18. Wonderfully inspirational and motivational, Martha, and so very relevant at this time of year. Jesus is, indeed, coming to this earth again, but we don't have to wait for that glorious day to know the wonder of His presence. He brings the Kingdom He promised with Him, and the power to transform the world lives in us. Jesus was God's "Christmas gift" to the world when He came, and we are the gift He gave to the world when He left. Christmas is a time when we get to both celebrate gifts and be one. May God bless you and Danny as you offer yourselves to be the gifts sent to others in Jesus' name, and thank you for being special gifts to Diane and me and all those other loving fans in your tribe.

    1. You are absolutely right, Ron! Jesus was God's Christmas gift to the world and we Christians are the gift He gave to the world when He left. Wow! I had always thought about Jesus as being God's gift to us, but you've beautifully pointed out here that we as believers are responsible to become that gift of love that keeps on giving. May each and every one of us rise to that occasion this Christmas season and beyond.

We have about 6 advent calendars and way too many traditions to focus on Christ, but my favorite is how the start the season: Gifts to Christ. 23. I'm celebrating "Forty Days of Praise"--a list of praise scriptures and questions, with an invitation to write a prayer of response. It's going to take me longer than the 40 days. (I suppose I write too much!) But focusing on praise during Advent is a wonderful antidote to the stress-of-overwhelm that can creep up on me in December!

    1. I so love this idea, Nancy! Focusing on praise is such a meaningful way to celebrate Advent and go invite Jesus into our hearts anew. The last thing we need are, as you say, the stresses-of-overwhelm, and I think that's what God doesn't want for us either.

  26. Your reflections on Advent are truly beautiful, and I appreciate the gentle invitation to slow down and notice the presence of the Lord in the ordinary moments.

I don’t personally celebrate Advent or Christmas in a traditional way, though I am a believer. But I do bring more light into the house during this season. There’s a star in our front window now, filled with tiny lights, and in the back I’ve hung a little star garland — that one has actually been there for months. I’ve also been lighting more candles lately.

Thank you for your encouraging words, and blessings to you in this season of waiting and hope.

  27. Great post, food for thought Martha Jane. Sitting in silence and quietness is easier in this part of the world I think, as we do not have the gift giving on Christmas traditionally, but on December 5th (today) when Saint Nicolas comes to give his gifts to children.
