Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. ~Proverbs 30:5
I've always been a word lover. Those of you who have followed my blog for any length of time know that I'm hooked on Jumble puzzle books and, more recently, 5 Across, a free game on Fox News that is much like Wordle. I engage in these activities not only because they're entertaining, but also because I need to exercise my mind, especially in light of my family's history with Alzheimer's.
So naturally, when My Word Club makes its unsolicited appearance in my inbox one day, my interest is peaked. I have to give it a try!
Just as the screen above displays, each session provides the player with three words, in this case, providential, nonchalance and botheration. It offers a definition, too, which I must admit, I have to check from time to time unless I'm absolutely sure what the word means.
The next step is to use the word in the correct context.
What would your choice be?
Now it's time for the similes. I only choose two for the purpose of taking a photo; once the third simile is chosen, the screen immediately changes. I'm sure you can tell what word should be third.
The next part of the game asks you once again to use the word correctly in a phrase.
Is it A or B?
The last challenge for each word is to use the first letter provided to spell out a simile that fits the word. This is sometimes the point where I have to use the hint button if the correct word doesn't come quickly to mind. I don't need a hint on this particular one. Can you guess what the word is?
The game continues in the same manner using the two remaining words. If you don't miss a single one or opt for the hint button, your total score is 24. You lose points, of course, each time you make an incorrect choice or request help.
What's even more fun is that My Word Club will invite you to engage with another challenge should you so choose. I often take them up on it if I don't have a lot on my to-do list that particular day.
Yes, words have always played an integral part in my life. But there is nothing more important than immersing myself daily in God's Word. The Bible is my spiritual nourishment, the daily bread for my soul. I've made reading it a priority, and no matter how many times I do, even the verses and stories I think I know by heart take on fresh meaning and insights I never thought of before.
Is the same true for you?
Amen!

I read a couple devotionals each day, and am very active in our church. I like word games as well. I play words with Friends and another word game on my phone from the New York times. I haven't heard of this one.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to know that you spend dedicated time in God's Word, Ginny, and that you enjoy word games, too. If this game sounds like a fun one, I'd suggest simply looking it up on Google and see if you can subscribe.

This definitely sounds like a wonderful game to play! Like you, I love words and word play games - I've never heard of this game before. And oh yes, the Word of God is the very best collection of words, indeed! HIS words! Many blessings to you Martha!
ReplyDeleteI'm not surprised to see so many word lovers here at the blog, Marilyn, as we all enjoy writing. You are absolutely correct when you say that God has given us the best collection of words in the Bible. I look forward to my reading time every day. What comfort His words provide!
DeleteBlessings!
AMEN!!! Wishing you a beautiful day my friend.
ReplyDeleteWishing you the same, Linda.

I like to play Scrabble but Jo doesn't so the game sits on the shelf. I am not into games or puzzles on my phone. I prefer to read. However, judging by what I saw at the airport last weekend, there are tons of people who are. Playing word games at least keeps the mind engaged. Good for you! As for God's Word? I 100% agree with you (and the psalmist). Nothing beats that!!!
ReplyDeleteNothing beats God's Word, Bill, I agree! Danny doesn't like word games, either, so Scrabble is never an option for us. I think that's why I love finding word games I can play on my own.
DeleteBlessings!
My wife and I are somewhat old-fashioned when it comes to word games. She does the word scramble in the daily newspaper, and I di the crossword.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love words, Glynn, I've never had the patience for crossword puzzles. More power to you!
DeleteBlessings!
A well-read Bible defines a person.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post and reminder, Martha. God bless you.
Doesn't it though, Victor?

I do enjoy word games as well. I often think of how proud my High School English teacher would be of me, if she could see me now, compared to my Junior and Senior years of being in her English class. I think that choosing writing, journaling, and the such, has totally changed my outlook on learning new words and enjoying the challenges.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, Shug, I have no doubt that she would be most proud of you. English was my favorite subject in high school and I ended up majoring in it in college. Looking back now, I wish I'd opted for something more practical, but since no one can go back in time, I'll just be content in the moment.

This made me think of my Dad loved crossword puzzles.
ReplyDeleteMy mother loved crosswords, too, Christine, and she also did the daily Jumble in her newspaper. That's probably why I do Jumble puzzles today.
DeleteBlessings!
Dear Martha, I do love word games, but I don't participate in online games, linkups or group stuff. I do crossword puzzles, usually the mixed ones such as cryptograms as well as regular ones. I have done some Bible crossword puzzles as well.
ReplyDeleteThe Bible crossword puzzles sound like a fun challenge, Linda. As I mentioned to Glynn above, I've never had the patience for sticking with crossword puzzles, so I admire everyone who does. I'll bet you're a whiz at Scrabble!

My "love language" is words of affirmation, so like you, I do like words. This game you're playing looks interesting. Not sure I have the time for it, but it does look like a healthy and helpful challenge to keep the mind sharp.
ReplyDeleteIt really doesn't take long to play, Barbara. If it did, I wouldn't stick with it - LOL! I certainly can understand how words of affirmation are your love language. They are for me, too.
DeleteBlessings!
I enjoy word games too. Have you ever played Quiddler? You don't have to be a wordsmith to win--it's great fun!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of Quiddler, Nancy. I'll certainly have to look that up. Wait until I tell Danny that I've got yet another word game to play online - LOL!
DeleteBlessings!
Oh--sorry about that. I didn't make clear that Quiddler is a CARD game!!
DeleteThanks for this clarification, Nancy. I'll be sure to check it out!
DeleteI like words too, probably not as much as you do.
ReplyDeleteThe word of God is critical to learn - to read - to study. I think you can read the bible or verses and years later read them again and there meaning changes - I guess depending on where we are in life
I play word games too. I am trying to keep my mind sharp!
I think we're all trying to do something to keep our minds sharp as we get older, Sandie. I agree that reading the Bible at different times in our lives can reveal entirely new meanings depending upon our maturity, experience and lessons learned. I'm on my 8th year of reading the Bible all the way through.
DeleteBlessings!
Yes, definitely give God’s Word priority. Blessings.
ReplyDeleteThat's my top priority, Diana.
DeleteBlessings!
Well, nothing beats God's word -- but I believe at the same time, He wants us to keep our minds sharp. I'm definitely going to look for MyWords Club!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to know that you'll be doing this, Myra. We do have to keep our minds sharp in order to read and internalize God's Word, don't we?
DeleteBlessings!
Hi Martha Jane, yes, I find the Word of God the priority in my life and read it every morning. The Words 'love' and 'wisdom' stand our as do many others, but it must always be positive and not negative. God bless you.
ReplyDeleteIt is my priority, too, Brenda. The Bible is our road map, our guide, in understanding God's will for us as His children.
DeleteBlessings!
Sounds like a fun game! Thanks for the suggestion!
ReplyDeleteIt is fun to play, Cheryl.

Like you, Martha, I'm a long time lover of words, and the role they play in our lives never ceases to be both fascinating and challenging for me. Our Lord's declaration that our words will be called forth to reinforce either justification or condemnation when we stand before Him. It grieves me how little attention so many seem to pay to this basic, foundational form of communication. It appears to me these days that words tend to be used more as tools for manipulation than for enlightenment and inspiration. But thank God there are still people like you who use them to impart all kinds of good things--including games to simulate the brain. As you can probably tell, mine needs a lot more stimulating, so maybe I'll check out the game you introduced today. Either way, thank you once again for inviting us into your life and I hope you win in whatever game you choose to play next.
ReplyDeleteI can tell just by the way you write on your blog and by your always thoughtful comments here that you certainly are a lover of words, Ron. Like you, it saddens me that people today use words to manipulate and/or shame others instead of offering kindness and inspiration. As Christians, we must avoid using words in a negative manner at all costs. If you do decide to check out this game, let me know what you think.

I am not good at word games, or number games. I do enjoy simple crossword puzzles. Simple me. And I do love the God's word.
ReplyDeleteGod's word is the most important of all, Henny Penny, so you've chosen the best route for you and all of us. I still struggle with crossword puzzles, even the "simple" ones.
DeleteBlessings!
It has long fascinated me that every time I read scripture a new facet is revealed. Scripture truly is "alive."
ReplyDeleteHugs and Blessings
P.S.- Sudoku is my favorite puzzle type.
I totally agree with you there, Jim! I'm not a numbers gal, so I've never even tried Sudoku. Maybe, I should just to stimulate a different part of my thought processes.

Makes me think of my grandmother who loved crosswords. I never cared for them but my daughter loves them. I guess I just skipped a generation. :) This sounds like an interesting game.
ReplyDeleteI guess it's true, Bill, that sometimes the propensity for talents skips a generation. Thanks for sharing this here about your grandmother and daughter. My mother used to love crossword puzzles, but as I've mentioned in previous comments, I never got the knack for them. Yet, my son seems to tackle them with ease. I do enjoy playing this game as it's both fun and challenging.
DeleteBlessings!
This looks like a fun word game. Wordsmiths thrive on words and their meanings. And yes, we must keep our minds sharp with mental exercise, just as we try to keep our bodies in shape.
ReplyDeleteBlessings, love.
I truly look forward to seeing this challenge show up in my inbox every day, Debra. Taking joy in the simple pleasures, I believe, not only keeps our minds sharp but our hearts young, too. Thanks for coming by!
DeleteBlessings!
Martha, I see why you say this word game really challenges your mind. I've always been a lover of words, too. And like you, God's Word plays an integral part of my life. God bless.
ReplyDeleteOh, I do know how important God's Word and His promises are to you, Karen, as you so aptly express in your weekly blog. We, as bloggers, must be by default, people who love to communicate by words.
DeleteBlessings
Sorry, this comment was me. :-)
ReplyDeleteMartha, I see why you say this word game really challenges your mind. I've always been a lover of words, too. And like you, God's Word plays an integral part of my life. God bless.
I responded in the former comment because I saw this one below, Karen. God has certainly blessed us with the gift of writing, hasn't He?
DeleteBlessings once again!
I'm a Wordle and crossword fan, too. In an effort to keep my mind sharp, I started studying languages two years ago and have really come to enjoy it. It was very helpful for trips to France and I've now added German. No trip planned, but hoping to visit Germany in the next few years.
ReplyDeleteI've heard the same about the benefits of studying other languages as we get older, Carol. I admire your dedication to that endeavor so greatly. Glad to know, too, that you enjoy Wordle and crosswords. Lots of bloggers, it seems, are enamored with words and that makes sense to me.

Sometimes I have too many words coming into my mind with facebook, blogs, messages at church, message from bible study, messages from the books I read. Right now I am reading several books, finishing up with Boundries, 1000 White Women, Stop in the name of God, is my latest want to read. it sits on my desk, staring at me right now but I think for me to get the most out of it I need to finish a couple of projects. I did start in Jan. making mini houses out of cardboard which does not take reading anything, its a trial by error project. Winters are long and hard up in northern Mn. so unless ones prepared for it with inside projects the mind will go where it shouldn't. And then there is my book sitting in my computer just waiting for me to finishes it. Lately I have been getting huge hints to tackle it. I have had to ask myself why is it still sitting and I think I know now why. To finish writing is to then go on to the next step, publishing and letting all who choose to read it and comment. It's fear of rejection, fear it will far short of God's purpose due to my human part of me. Words weigh heavy on my heart Martha and your post stirred those words up again. It feel safe to sit on the before side of finishing it. Pray my blog friend, that I will take courage and drop a few other project to take up my book again. I know it needs to be finished. Blessings.
ReplyDeleteYou have a weight of the word world on your plate, Betty, and that's no exaggeration! Please let me know, when you can, how Charlie Kirk's book spoke to you as I've been seriously considering ordering it for myself. Yes, I will certainly pray for you as the Holy Spirit moves you to complete the book waiting on your computer for you to address. Fear of rejection can be paralyzing in the moment, but should never keep us from pursuing the goals we know God has purposed for us. Praying for courage and perseverance for you!
DeleteBlessings!
thank you Martha, I am heading over to my book this morning even though I feel no motivations to do so, only knowledge that I need to finish it.
DeleteGood for you, Betty! You can do this with God's help.
DeleteI love playing with words too and love you found lessons within this joy we share!
ReplyDeleteI had no doubt that you were/are a lover of words, Jean, and that playing with them brings you joy in the creativity of writing and word challenges in general.
DeleteBlessings!
Martha I so agree with you regarding God's word...reading it also is a necessary part of my mornings. Have never played Wordle...I do enjoy Scrabble, Word Wipe and several other word games. Hope you are having a great week. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteWord Wipe is a new one on me, Debbie. Is it a board game or online? I love Scrabble, too, but my husband prefers backgammon which we play every evening after dinner. That always exercises my brain in the parts that don't naturally see the spatial and mathematical. Great discipline is necessary for those, too!

Bom dia, Martha
ReplyDeleteA Palavra de Deus é um rico alimento para nossa vida. Jogar faz um bem à mente, não conhecia esse jogo. Gosto muito de palavras cruzadas. Um forte abraço.
I'm glad to know that you enjoy crossword puzzles, Lucinalva. Playing word games do give our minds a workout, but God's Word is the absolute best for our souls.
DeleteBlessings!
We have in common this love for words, Martha. And word games! I was thrilled when the Wordle word of the day a few weeks ago was my One Word "Shift." :) Sometimes it's the little things that also bring us joy. Glad you're having fun with another new word game!
ReplyDeleteHow sweet is that? Wow, Lisa! Having the word be the same as you chose for the year sounds like God had a hand in it. Yes, the older I get, the more I take great joy in the simplest of things. Isn't that how it should be?
DeleteBlessings!
Word games are such a fun way to keep the mind sharp, and I love how you connect that with the richness of God’s Word.
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Martha!
Yes, Veronica, I find word games to be challenging and fun at the same time, and I'm glad to know that you do, too. Reading God's Word, though, is the very best way to keep our minds sharp.
DeleteBlessings!
I love these kind of games and puzzles. Gotta keep those aging minds sharp! Sudoku 16 x 16 and Bananagrams are my go to's these days.
ReplyDeleteHappiest Monday to you, friend!
Thanks for sharing what games/puzzles you are doing to keep your mind active, Linda. I've never been great with numbers, so I've avoided doing Sudoku. Maybe, I should challenge myself to learn how to do it.
DeleteBlessings!
I guess I missed this post. That's looks like a great challenge for the brain game! I play Wordle, Connections and Strands online from NYT. I find them pretty challenging most of the time, but this looks like it would take that to another level. It might be good for my old brain to try it. Oh, did I hear a little birdie say that today or yesterday ? was/is your birthday? Since you're not on FB anymore I don't get the notices, but if it IS your birthday this week, I wish you the very best day ever. May God bless you with many many more Happy and Healthy and sweet birthdays!!You are a blessing to us!!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that you weren't on FB anymore, but what a fantastic memory you have, Pamela! Yes, my birthday was on the 1st of March and tomorrow's post will be on that very subject. Thanks for thinking of me and I hope you'll look up this game at some point. People have also suggested some others here which I plan to look up, too.

God’s word stands true! B Blessed Martha!
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, Mike, it certainly does! God's Word is truth and life for all of us.
