" . . . When You Move, I'll Move; I Will Follow You . . ."

John 6:26-27
Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.  Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.  For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."

Our "Squirrel-Buster" bird feeder hangs in our front yard for years.  We enjoy being able to watch the birds' activity from our living room windows.  They are quite the messy eaters, so enough seed drops to the ground to keep the mourning doves, squirrels, and chipmunks happy, too.

Recently, I note, with not a little concern, that the birds seem to be consuming their food at an unusually high rate.  I fill the feeder in the morning and, by the next day, the supply is depleted.  How can that be?

When I restock the feeder, I spy a thick coat of seed covering the ground.

It's as if someone has come along, picked up the feeder, and given it a hearty shake, allowing the seeds to spill out in a pile.  At first, I wonder if this is the doing of bored teenagers, slinking around the neighborhood, looking for pranks to pull.

But, then . . .

Standing in the living room, I glimpse a large shape moving near the feeder.  It's a deer.

Just one of many which live in and around our forested neighborhood.  Seeing her nuzzling the feeder reminds me of the time we saw a doe sticking her tongue into the apertures to retrieve some seeds.

Could that be it?  Are deer coming up and butting the feeder?

"I don't care if it's does or dodos messing with the bird feeder," my husband, Danny, declares.  "That food is too expensive to go to waste.  I'm moving the squirrel buster to the backyard today."

Using some clothesline, a pulley, hooks, and carabiners, Danny rigs the feeder so it is high enough off the ground to foil the deer, but able to be easily lowered when it's time to fill it.

"Oh, this is the perfect set-up!"  I tell him when he shows me what he's done.  "I wonder, though, how long it will take the birds to find it?"

"Maybe a day or two," says Danny.  "But, they'll find it, guaranteed."

And, they do!  Not in a day.  Not in two.  But, within the very hour of its location change!

I am so relieved.  And, gratified to know our feathered friends have faithfully followed and know where to come to be fed.

Are you letting Jesus feed you with spiritual food?

Will you pray with me?
As Jesus told us, Father, we do not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from You.  May we seek You daily for our spiritual nourishment and sustenance.  Let us follow Your lead and trust in Your ways.  Amen.

  1. This was a delightful post, Martha. I absolutely admire how you weave your personal stories and the spiritual seamlessly. You are indeed blessed to live in a place with beautiful fauna. I felt bad for the deer. Perhaps he was hungry too.

Blessings and joy for today and always.

    Joy always,
    Susan

I do feel very blessed to live where I do. Don't feel too badly for the deer; they have lots to feed on, especially this time of the year. :)

I love the deer, too; so graceful and beautiful to watch. But, they find plenty of things to eat in the forest, so I don't feel too sorry for moving the feeder. :)
      Blessings to you!

  7. oh my gosh! my husband tried the pulleys and string and fishing wire...we lost the battle..the squirrels won.
but life is a constant battle of good and evil...and lucky for us believers we know who wins in the end.

I love your comparison of combating the squirrels to the constant one between good and evil - excellent!
Oh, and you can beat those squirrels by ordering the "squirrel buster" feeder on line. It really does work!
      Blessings to you!

  8. I agree with Susan. It's challenging enough to write fresh and lively content but to view in your spirituality with ease is truly a wonder. It's not something I would be enjoy doing myself, but I appreciate your talent. I come here expectant and am never disappointed when I leave.

  9. I can relate to this story because the deer in my neighborhood have been quite the thieves in my garden this year. In the beginning I couldn't figure out what was eating the tops off all my tomato, bean and rose plants. I haven't actually seen the deer in action but have caught them in my front yard and it finally dawned on me who the culprits were. Not much I can do about it though and like you I can't figure out why they are after my garden when it is surrounded by a green forest full of plenty to eat... Love your story and pictures.

The deer, it seems, have been overly active this year . . . I noticed that the Kennesaw Community Garden is surrounded by extremely tall fences to exclude the deer from dining there. I guess that's what it takes around here to keep them out. Sorry they feasted on your garden!
Glad you enjoyed the post, my friend.
      Blessings to you!

  10. As the deer longs for bird feed, so my soul longs for Thee… wait! I mean, as the deer longs for water, so my soul longs for Thee. Psalm ?
That is such a sweet deer!
And the feed, that’s for the birds!

Your post reminded me of this song.

Lol! I wrote a post months ago about deer and used the Bible verse about the deer longing for cool water. And, yes, we made sure the seed is now for the birds only. So far, it's working beautifully.
I'm not familiar with Moya Brennan, but I will be sure to check out the link you left here.
      Blessings to you, my friend!

  11. Oh the poor deer! It must be wondering where that bird feeder went. But your husband did the right thing! That deer was not eating the seeds , just wasting what was rightfully the birds' food. Beautiful post as always, Martha.

Yes! So far, so good. Placing the bird feeder in the backyard seems to have solved the problem and we are getting more birds than ever. They really like the new location.
So glad you enjoyed the post, my friend.
      Blessings to you!

  12. What a delightful story! I didn't think it would take long for your birds to follow their feeder. And Danny was correct, there are many times that I run out of feed just because how much the price has gone up on it...I can't always afford enough for each of the feeders. But, then I also feel bad for the deer. They need to eat too!

Yes, the birds followed the feeder quickly and now it's busier than it's ever been! And, don't worry too much about the deer. There is plenty to eat in the forest and, from what I hear, in people's gardens. :)
      Blessings to you!

Oh, yes, our Father does provide for each and every one of His creatures. The deer have plenty of food in these woods and seem to be multiplying and thriving in spite of the bird seed.:)
You be blessed, too, my friend!

  14. I love your posts and have missed coming. I am trying to get caught up again, and with this upper resp infection and the med I have to take it's been keeping me up,so at least I am doing something special with that time! Loved the post! You are in Kinnesaw GA? We recently moved to Albany; below the knat line! BTW, I find that when I am not still enough to be fed, I get taught those lessons in my life experiences, many of them not being very comfortable. Thanks for another thought provoking post and blessings to you!

Yes, we are in the Big K as I like to call it :). Love living here, but not sure if I would enjoy being year round below the gnat line . . . I know exactly what you're referring to!
And, yes, we must learn to be still to be fed. Not always and easy lesson . . .
      Blessings right back at you!

  15. I love the birds, I have had to forgo my feeders because of my kitties, quite unfair to the birds. I still see a lot of birds but not nearly so many. Although the humming birds were all over the plum tree a week or so ago. I would love to have a dear in my front yard. I think I would love where you live...Thank you for this post Martha.

I hear you about the kitties being a problem with attracting birds. Fortunately, our cats are old and don't even bother trying to get near the birds let alone catch one.
I must admit, I do love living where we do, but where you are, as I can tell from your gorgeous photos, is beautiful, too. Hope to see more photos soon! :)

  18. Oh how intelligent God's creatures are! They find their way by themselves... I wonder if it's the deer that 'butts' the feeder :P...I haven't seen a live deer before.

I love the passage you quoted at the beginning...it makes me reflect on the Sacrament of the Eucharist...

I pray with you...may we go beyond our physical needs and look for the spiritual food God provides...

Yes, the birds caught on faster than we ever expected them to and our feeder is busier than ever. No deer yet! :)
I like that this passage reminded you of Holy Eucharist - being fed physically to assure us we are being fed spiritually, too.
Thank you for praying with me!

  19. When I still lived at home, out in the country with my Mom, we had all manner of critters. Our property is high up on a ridge in East TN, and is surrounded by very large tracts of forest. Foxes, deer, possums, the occasional bear, and when I still living at home...raccoons. They, along with squirrels, are the most clever critters when it comes to foiling the best laid plans of bird feeding humans! No matter what we tried, the raccoons and squirrels always won the day. It became a humorous contest of wits and will, and eventually we had to hire a company to trap the raccoons and take them up to the mountains to release them. They were getting too comfortable and aggressive around our family pets, but oh my goodness, they provided some hilarious moments! :)

Wow! What a great scenario you have shared here. I have seen the occasional possum here, but never a raccoon; no doubt, though, that we must have some.
So far, we are winning this battle. The bird feeder is aptly named "Squirrel Buster" and does keep them from gorging on the seeds.
But, as you might know, squirrels are some of my favorite animals, so much so, that a squirrel (Grey) is a main character in my novel. :)
      Blessings to you!
