Singing for the Sake of Song

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. ~Psalm 96:1

A trilling chord betrays its presence

Uninvited.  Frog caught

In chimney prison, pleads for help

We cannot see, cannot reach

To rescue, save, set free

And still, its cries of hope ring

Echoing in chambers bleak

Singing for the sake of song

Faith unbridled and unleashed

In life, in death, the same

Singing for the sake of song

Amen

  1. Intriguing poem ... How did the frog get in the chimney? We did once have a bird fall down the chimney, which we managed to rescue and release. But not a frog. Did it climb all the way up the roof? You've set me thinking now ... which is the sign of a good poem. Thanx Martha.

    God bless.

    1. There are lots of frogs around my mother's home, Victor, due to a pond being near by. I don't know how the frog got into the chimney and whether it was able to get out again, though I do hope it did! I'm glad the words here made you think, my friend.

  2. Sometimes, the most we can do is val faith for the sake of having faith. And it turns out to be sufficient.

  3. I love your poetry. I was thinking though how much it would bother me to hear the frog's cries for help!

    1. It was distressing, Lulu, but at the same time, his call had a ring of joy to it, as if he was right where he wanted to be. I do hope he made his way out eventually. And thanks for your kind words regarding my poetry. :)

  4. Dearest Martha Jane,
Yes, those tree frogs can get into anything and let's hope it found its way out again.
They give always a good spring/summer concert and their 'voices' are happy ones of new beginnings.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. Yes, Mariette, I do love listening to the chorus of frogs, especially after a good rain. Thanks for letting me know that these creatures are able to extricate themselves from precarious situations.

  7. Singing for the Sake of Song. Sometimes that's all we can do, when joy is illusive. You've reminded me of an old Gaither song, God Gave the Song. The lyrics begin: "You ask my why my heart keeps singing, why I can sing when things go wrong. But since I've found the Source of music, I just can't help it. God gave the song." During these dark days, we can still sing, just like that frog in your dark chimney! (Lord, help us sing your song no matter what.)

    1. Oh, Nancy, I simply must find this song on YouTube! God certainly does give us the songs to sing, when we, like Paul, are confined in prison. No one, no matter what their earthly power, can overcome the joy in the Lord.

  11. Wonderful poem...and I pray the frog was able to Leap to safety. They are pretty good at hopping their way out of difficult places. I am glad he was joyful in his song no matter what. Good lesson for us.

    1. A wonderful lesson, indeed, Pamela. We sing and celebrate no matter where we find ourselves. Happiness is temporary, but joy is forever. I do think this frog found his way out when the time afforded him. God is good like that, isn't He?

  16. Was gone all weekend to Ohio so missed posting earlier Martha. A song in the heart is one of the cure's to the "blues." Without specifically mentioning singing, my post on Shadow tomorrow (Monday) will talk about the need for a song in the heart.

  17. "Singing for the sake of song," what an interesting thought. Music (and scripture) are balms to my soul during these days of not-much-good-news.

    Great photo of a frog!
