The Best Time Ever!

Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life.  And teach them to your children and grandchildren. ~Deuteronomy 4:9

How can I even begin to describe the memorable times we have spent with granddaughter, Virginia, and other family members over these last two weeks?  Blessed beyond measure is a start, but even that cannot convey the joy of our days together.  And honestly, the time flies by so quickly while Virginia is with us, I find myself wishing with all my heart that I could stop its flight or, at least, slow it down.

Photos will have to do for a freeze frame, though.  Before I get into our specific adventures and experiences over the last several weeks, I'm going to share some pictures of Virginia that we took.  She certainly has grown and matured since last fall.  It's hard to believe she will be turning 12 later this month - talk about time flying!  Enjoy!

When we finally have to say good-bye a week ago Monday, I say to Virginia, "I wish we were starting out our time together all over again."

She hugs me and says, "I do too, Gammie.  It was the best time ever!"

Amen!

(More adventures to come!  Stay tuned!)

  3. I don't know if they understand what they do for a grandparent's heart. If they don't, they will when it's their turn. My grandson Jacob just turned 7, and we gave him a Golden State Warriors jersey. He opened the gift, saw the jersey, and hugged us both, saying "I am a happy child!"

    1. Aw, what a sweet story, Glynn! Alexandra will be turning 7 this month. And no, I'm not sure they realize what joy they bring to their grandparents, but that's okay - we do realize and are blessed by it.

  4. Dearest Martha Jane,
The top photo is showing a perfect clone of yourself!
No wonder you like her so much as it is kind of reliving your own youth.
But it is very special to make such lasting impressions on her life, that will remain with her forever.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. I'm flattered, Mariette, that you see me in Virginia. She really and truly takes after her dad's side of the family in looks - just being honest! We have treasured her from the moment she was born and always will.

    2. Comparing your profile picture next to hers at the top Martha; she has parted her hair opposite yours. But she DOES resemble you a lot! We all know that facial expressions do change and one can find similarities from both sides—no doubt and then the character which I cannot judge of course. Plus, what we always studied in biology; look at the 3rd generation! True in mushrooms and often true in humans as well. Hugs,
      Mariette

  5. I too thought I was looking at a photo of you in your youth Ms. Martha. What a joyous time all y'all must've had. I will long cherish Miss Virginia's note. In fact, I'm framing it. :-) So very glad you guys all got to make some great memories together. God's blessings.

    1. I'm glad Miss Mariette got a second for her observation, J. D. Now I truly am flattered! And how wonderful it is that you are framing Virginia's note - wow! The subject of my next blog is all about the rocks you so thoughtfully sent her, and her response. She had absolutely no coaching from either Danny or me - these were all her own honest words of appreciation. I know when I tell her you will be framing this, she will be overjoyed.

  11. Aw, that was so sweet and precious. I know you hated to see her go back home. Maybe she can come again before school starts. She is growing up so quickly. I love the relationship you have with her. She is so blessed to have you in her life like you have been. I never had that kind of relationship with either of my grandmothers. I feel like I missed out on something really special. What a blessing for both of you.

    1. Our relationship with Virginia is so very special, Pamela, that's for sure. So much of her young years were spent with frequent visits with Danny and me. Now that they live in NC, we miss those days all the more. I'd love to see her again before school starts, but we'll have to wait and see how the summer goes.

  14. Virginia is so pretty and I know her heart is too! I remember well how fast two weeks can go with grandchildren. Ours lived in New Jersey and we got them for two weeks in the summer. So much fun and so many wonderful memories! I am looking forward to your next blog, Martha!!

    1. When I was a kid, I, too, only got to see my grandparents for two weeks during the summer when the entire family would visit. Yes, I have great memories of those times, but always wished we could visit more often. I got so spoiled when my daughter's family lived close by, I'm still finding this adjustment difficult. Glad you're looking forward to the next blog!

  17. Beautiful in every sense of the word, Martha. This whole grandparent thing is one of the most wonderful of God's gifts to us, and we rejoice along with you as you embrace these moments in concert with the Spirit of God and the love that Jesus embodied. I'm convinced that Virginia will be a conduit to pass that along to others as she grows and develops. Many thanks for allowing us into these precious experiences.
