A New Thing

See, I am doing a new thing!  Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?  I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert. ~Isaiah 42:19

As I promised all of you two months back, here are our two new decks completed and ready to be painted.  We also plan to have our house painted at the same time, and will keep keep the same color as we've grown fond of it over the years.  The deck color?  We wish we could simply treat it with a clear stain, but the golden hue of the wood will only fade into gray if it's not actually painted.  So, we've chosen a lighter, neutral shade of paint that will compliment the rustic feel of the house.

The view of the stairs on the backyard deck and a look at the deck itself.  Two new benches have been added, and goodness, they are comfortable!

Our front deck boasts a bench, too.  This one we've owned for quite awhile, but it still looks new.

The stairs going down and up from the deck.

As you can see, the original measurements did not provide for wood steps all the way to the ground, but the guy who poured the concrete did a wonderful job.

Look at the detail on the hand rail.

I still need a railing when going up or down the stairs, both inside the house and out!

These guys didn't cut corners when it came to securing the deck foundations.

Sure makes me feel secure when I choose to sit outside on a balmy spring day.

I do hope you all enjoyed the "tour."  I'll have another deck feature once all the painting is completed.

In the meantime, may we all be mindful (my word for the year) of all the new blessings God is sending our way each and every day.

And may we always give thanks.

Amen!

  2. I love the look of natural wood too Ms. Martha, but it never seems to stay like that. Lesson there, isn't it? Also loved how you found spiritual lessons from this; strong foundations and all. God's blessings and may you, Mr. Danny, and those precious grandgirls of yours spend many happy years out there.

    1. There certainly was a lot of hard work involved when the decks were being built, Glynn, and we're so grateful for the work ethics of the guys, that's for sure.

  5. Dearest Martha Jane,
That is a class job DONE.
Guess the bottom steps in concrete are far better as the water cannot be absorbed from the yard during rainy times. Thus prolonging the life of the stairs and deck.
You never mentioned which side of the house the deck is—south side?
Good luck with all the painting and then you have once again a NEW HOME.
    Enjoy the upcoming spring!
We had frost early morning but now bright sun.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. Good question, Mariette - the front deck faces east and the back one, west. Since we are surrounded by trees, we don't get much direct sunlight and no true views of sunsets or sunrises. But being shaded does help our paint last longer.

    2. Martha, it is not so much the direct sunlight but also the light that enters the home. In Italy where we lived for instance, the cheaper homes were on the 'wrong' side of the mountain. So those people had to have their light on during the day! It would be rather depressive to me...
Your paint will definitely 'fade' less in a shaded area. But the lasting effect has more to do with the quality of the paint.
Good luck with your mega job on the house!

  9. How clean and sturdy it all looks! Love the attention to detail; and yes, I've become dependent on hand rails wherever they exist. I think I'd be like you, and more inclined to use a clear stain ... who'd guess it would 'turn' in time?! I know you're pleased as punch, as well you should be. Thank you for sharing it, Martha!

  10. Clean and sturdy describes it all, Myra. Yes, these guys did exactly what they promised to do, and we couldn't be more pleased. Painting is slated to start next week, so I can't wait to observe that process, too.

  14. Thanks for the tour Martha. It looks to me like they did a fantastic job! It is kind of hard to put a deck on our ranch style home with no steps in sight either front or back. Then again, as we get older no steps are nice. :)

    1. Sounds like you all don't have a use for a deck, Bill - just one less expense to worry about! And I have to agree that no steps at all is much easier as we age. I was always so grateful that mom's home was all one level!

  16. Thanks for your explanations with images. I was surprised that the wood were carefully processed not to hurt visitors hands with fine splits. All images you took show me the spirit of an artisan silently and eloquently.
