Straight Paths

As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:  "A voice of one calling in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight pats for him.' ~Luke 3:4

This first week of May has been an unusual one for us to say the least.  The temperatures haven't gotten out of the sixties in the afternoons, falling into the forties overnight.  It is more like March than May; I'll take it!

But with the coolness has come some gusty, and often powerful winds.  Again, more like March!  Leaf debris and weakened branches litter our decks and yard.  Those are easy enough to clean up.  But what we don't know, nor expect, was to have a small maple near the top of our very steep driveway snap under the wind's strength, and land smack dab on the drive, blocking egress from out house.

We are so thankful that this event happens late in the afternoon, and with no place we are scheduled to be the following morning, Danny can wait to tend to them.  And tend, he does!

And here is the culprit for the tree's weakness - damage and rot from the inside.

It's quite the job, but Danny's new handsaw works so well, he doesn't have to pull out the cumbersome chain saw.  With the limbs gone, he can maneuver the relatively slender trunk off the driveway and into the piles of forest debris.  It now waits for son, Nicco, to arrive and claim the wood.  His turn to do some hard labor - LOL!

~

We all will, at some point or another, face obstacles blocking our paths or forcing us to make detours we otherwise would never have imagined.  And I think we would all agree that removing those impediments are not always within our means or abilities.  In those times, we must lean on help from the Lord, asking Him to guide us in the way He would have us go.  He will prepare our way, and make our paths straight.

Amen!

  2. What concerns me the most, Martha, is what caused the tree to fall in the beginning...inside rot. Lots of lives have been ruined because of inside rot.

    1. Yes, they absolutely have, Bill. I think we care too much for outward appearances instead of the health of our spiritual lives on the inside. Let us clean out the rot, with God's help, of course!

  3. We've had pretty ferocious winds here in St. Louis as well. This past Sunday was the worst, but they've finally calmed down today.

  4. Thankfully no one was hurt or damage to property done. Indeed, it has turned cold once again.

Life is often difficult and unexpectedly so. We need to continue moving forwards in the full knowledge and trust that God is beside us to help.

Praying for you all. God bless.

    1. Yes, Victor, I'm so very glad and grateful that no one was injured when this tree fell. The kids were all here just a few weeks ago; I'm glad the tree didn't decide to come down then!
Thanks so much for your prayers!

  5. Another super analogy, Martha! One of our 'big' tree limbs broke away during a recent wind storm . Unfortunately, the old tree has been showing signs of impending death (like I would know, haha) for a while now. I hate like the dickens to see it taken down, but look forward to what's awaiting down the road.

    1. Having to take a tree down is always painful, Myra, even when we know it's the right thing to do. We had no idea how compromised this tree was until it came down with the help of the wind. Even though it was full of leaves, it was suffering from inner rot. Sadly, the same can be said for people.

  6. Well said, Martha. Amen. Gosh, I am so glad the tree didn't fall on anyone or on someone's vehicle!! Praise God for those mercies!! Nice that Danny was able to clear the driveway without too much trouble. Hoping there are no more trees that could cause trouble when the next storm comes. Take care!! xo

    1. Living in a forest, Terri, we're never sure of when the next limb, or tree itself, will fall. We'll gladly take the risk in order to enjoy the beauty of God's creation. We trust He is and will continue to look after us.

    Beautiful words and analogy.

  10. Sure glad no real property damage occurred and especially glad none of y'all were hurt. Lots of lessons we can take from this story my friend; strong winds of opposition, rotting from the inside out, cracks lead to falling, trimming away the branches, etc. Great post that will invoke many thoughts in the days to come.

    1. Thanks so much, J. D., for your kind words about this post! Sometimes when we write, we are too close to the story that we fail to see the other implications of what we are describing. Thanks for pointing those out. :)

  11. Hi Martha Jane, we get fairly strong winds here because we are close to the Irish sea, nothing as bad as when we lived out in the sticks in Australia though. So glad there was no damage to your home, you are in the Lord's arms.

    1. We are most definitely in the arms of the Lord, Brenda. Those strong winds from the sea account for most of the stunted tree growth on the coast, but I bet that was still a beautiful place to live.

  13. An insightful analogy, Martha! We allow the branches of worry and stress to obstruct the pathway of faith God has prepared for us. The good news is, he will lop off every single one as we prayerfully keep affirming our trust in him!

  16. Wow, so glad the tree did not fall on a vehicle or person! Glad you were able to take care of it without too much trouble. yes, it has been quite windy here as well, and we've had some cooler temps in the early morning mostly. But today seems warm and very humid. We were supposed to get rain, but I think it has passed us by. Still we are thankful for the cloud cover. Yes, obstacles do come and cause us delays and detours to our preferred pathway at times, but there always seems to be a reason for them that only God truly knows and it is for our best eventually, even if we don't fully comprehend it at first. God is in control and we are thankful for His guiding, loving hands to keep us moving in the right direction. Take care, my friend. So glad the maple did not fall in the wrong spot! God is Good.

    1. I'm so glad, too, Pamela, that the tree fell where it caused the least amount of harm and danger. Nothing like living in a forest! And God did use this event to give me the idea for this very blog. He is always at work, even in the inconvenient or troubling times. We simply need to trust that His ways are impeccable.

  17. Amen on the thought of leaning on the Lord...these last 17 months since our son passed away...well...its been difficult...but leaning on the Lord is all we can do...He knew Jesus and it comforts us to know he is in Heaven...I better leave it at that before the tears come flowing. smiles

    1. Linda, you have most certainly been through the wringer these past months, going through every parent's worst nightmare. Leaning on the Lord is the only way to get through something like this, knowing He will provide us light at the end of the tunnel, and that He loves us, and your son, unconditionally. Praying for you!
