The Smart Move

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. ~1 Peter 4:10

I've never been one who buys anything for the sake of merely owning it.  I'll use it up or wear it out before replacing clothes or other items that don't require an upgrade of sorts.  Take my phone, for example.  Even though it's seen better days, and no longer holds a charge reliably, I dig in my heels and obstinately refuse to entertain the idea of a new one.

And then, just like that, Danny persuades me otherwise.  His reaction is prompted by the tariffs proposed that will more than likely raise the price of smart phones in the foreseeable future.  We determine that it's better to invest in an upgrade now than wait and watch the costs soar.

Danny's brother recently purchases a Motorola Edge 2024 and is pleased with the product.  We decide that this same model will work well for me, too, without costing the proverbial arm and leg.  I pay for the phone, and much to my surprise, Danny orders a 68-watt charger separately, one made specifically for this particular model.

When Danny claims this gadget will charge my phone to full in 15 minutes, I'm skeptical, of course.  How can anything work that quickly and efficiently?  Oh, but how wrong I am!  It works lightning fast, and the new (for me) phone holds that charge to the point where I only have to think about giving it some "juice" every three days at the most.  Wow!  I can't tell you how many times I wake up in the past to discover that my smart phone is "dead."  Not anymore!  Not having that to worry about will take some getting used to.

And best of all, Danny is correct about the cost.  Had we waited until today to purchase it, instead of two weeks ago, it would be $75 more than what I paid.  Now, I'd say that is one smart move for one smart phone!

We know we are blessed to have the financial wherewithal to afford things that can be viewed as non-essential.  But this hasn't happened by accident.  Danny and I believe that we are to be good and faithful stewards of every blessing God sees fit to give us, and that includes our finances.  We work diligently to strike a balance between saving for later and giving in the moment to our church and to those in need.

And always, always, we give thanks to God for the undeserved grace that He freely offers to every one of His children when we first seek His kingdom above all else.

If you haven't already, make the truly smart move:  Allow God's great grace to fill your hearts with peace, joy and abundant life.

His power is always there to recharge you.

Amen!

  1. Congrats on the new phone! i went in two weeks ago to get a new one and the dude spent over 1 1/2 hours supposedly getting a data package, etc set up. it was supposed to be for my phone and home. Jo and I finally said, "Enough is enough" and walked out. Then the scheduled maintenance man never showed up. I still have my 13 mini. Jo still has hers that is older than mine. I will be careful not to mention Xfinity by name as the carrier. :) But I do agree with you that we all need recharged from time to time.

    1. Sounds like Jo and you have NOT had a very satisfactory experience with you phone "provider," Bill. Crazy! I hope you can get that resolved at some point soon. And yes, we all need that recharge from God every day, don't we?

  2. Mine is five years old, bought a week before the COVID lockdown. I'm watching as Apple's planned obsolescence - no more tech support or updates or security fixes - creeps closer and closer.

    1. Oh, it certainly does, Glynn. I do hate the fact that our phones are made to be obsolete by design just so we have to purchase new ones. And Apple products are definitely not cheap! That's why we've stuck with the android models.

  3. So thankful for HIS recharging power and for HIS mercy and grace. I had to purchase a new phone this past weekend and there is nothing simple about it. The phones have gotten to educated for me and trying to get them thing set up, took all weekend long. Good for your Martha...glad you found something that works good. Enjoy your day.

    1. A new phone for you, too? Wow, Shug! Yes, if it weren't for Danny's expertise, I'd have been pulling my hair out trying to set this new phone up, something he did with ease, thank goodness. And we should always be thankful for the recharging power of our Lord, each and every day.

  6. It's not hard to setup a new android. Just swap the Sim card and follow the directions. It took me about an hour, mostly moving apps into newly created folders. Almost all the apps transferred fine. (Tip: take photos of all the apps/directories on the old phone for reference when setting up the new phone). Apple phones, nope. Too expensive. I've immersed in that ecosystem years ago and I pass.

Smart hubby you've got there, Martha! We're still getting used to our (new-to-us) Samsung A-16's, but I keep my old Pixel around for playing word games and taking photos. (The camera quality's so much better.) It's always something!

    1. He is a pretty smart guy, Myra, I have to admit! One of our stipulations in getting me the Motorola was its ability to take really good photos, as Danny's brother attested to. Since I gave my real camera to Virginia, it's the only way I have to get photos. It's a keeper in my book, and so is Danny!

  10. Love the analogy, Martha! I'm praising God right now for all the years he's given me to enjoy his grace, the peace, joy, and abundant life you mentioned. We never need an upgrade where his benefits are concerned (Psalm 103)!

  11. My smart phone is a Motorola that I've had for a couple of years already. I love it. It was less than $200 and I hope it lasts at least another two years. I just plug it in every night and never have to worry about it losing power. You will like your Motorola, I think!! xo

  14. Yes, I'm thrifty too but at this moment maybe spending is more thrifty! In fact, I bought a car last month, a Subaru. It's probably going to be worth more than I paid for it, if not already. Incidentally, never bought a new car before! Aloha!

    1. My husband drives a Subaru, too, Cloudia! Mine is a Toyota Scion (which they don't make anymore), and we bought them both years ago. His is a 2012, bought new then, and mine is a 2006, bought used. Both are still running wonderfully. Good for you buying a new car for the first time, too. What fun!

  15. Opening your posts is kind of like closing my eyes and going through a door not knowing what scene is waiting on the other side. And as usual, your words illuminated a reflection or two of my own. For one thing, your approach to the issues was so like my Diane's. I've been prodding her to upgrade her "old" Apple watch for over a year. It was an older version when the kids gave it to her and I'm waiting to see if starts to get wrinkles and randomly forget what day it is. But the thing that resonated most of all had nothing to do with that. I thought about the struggle I've often had with abandoning a familiar process, thing, environment, etc. and moving on to something new. Even when the old thing is clearly deficient, my tendency is to just hang in there with it for another day or two, which evolves into another year, or two.
The living God we love and serve is not about to relinquish principles and designs that reflect Him and that honor His name, but that doesn't mean He won't wrap them in fresh new garments, or apply them in ways we never anticipated. My challenge, then, is to consider the new thing, new direction, new understanding, etc. in the context of what He's called me to do, and how it might affect the outcome. New is often uncomfortable at first, but often eventually to become the "old thing" we struggle to cling to. Thank you again, dear friend, for the unexpected scene and the uplifting thoughts that came with it.

    1. As I like routine and things NOT changing, Ron, I hear you (and Diane) loud and clear. But God will take us out of our comfort zone when He knows we're headed for a rut in the road. The older we get, it's harder to adjust, but if we simply trust Him to recharge us and give us the will and determination to heed His calling, we will always, always be much better for it. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughtful impressions with us here today!

  16. Congrats on the phone (and charger) upgrade. These things have morphed from a luxury to a necessity, which forces us to learn new things when we would rather not. At least, that's been true for me. I've had to replace my laptop computer and my cell phone (not at the same time) since Tom died 4 years ago. He was the expert on such things but the Lord got me through the processes and I'm thankful. Sincerely thankful.

Yes, given the way things are now with tariffs and such, replacing your phone now seems to have been a wise choice.
