Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. He answered and said to them, "When it is evening you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red'; and in the morning, 'It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. ~Matthew 16:1-3
Unusual weather we're havin', ain't it? ~The Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz
The month of May here in Georgia is usually one replete with warm temperatures to herald the hot, humid, sticky, wall-of-heat summer in the offing. But if you look at the header photo, you can see for yourself that this May is off to an anomalous start. Yes, here it is, 4 o'clock in the afternoon, and our high is 64 very cool degrees. Since neither Danny nor I are partial to Georgia summers, this is a welcome, if temporary, respite from stifling temperatures and high air conditioning bills.
According to our local weather prognosticators, this entire week should feature highs only in the low 70s. Talk about a breath of fresh air! Now, to be fair, there will be rain for most of that time, but in my book, that's not a downside. I love the rain, and with it, our moss transforms into a thick carpet of emerald green - a joy to behold!
Weather is the one topic that everyone talks about, but there isn't anything we can do to change it. Yet, it can change much about us. For example, we can grumble and complain about that washed-out picnic or rain delay in a baseball game. Or, we can accept the inclement day with gratefulness for an opportunity to put our feet up and read that novel or watch that movie we've been putting off for far too long. It's all about attitude and outlook.
In today's fast-paced world, we have all kinds of computer models and sophisticated technology that allow meteorologists to predict the weather for the weeks ahead with astonishing accuracy. The people living in Jesus' day depended on the signs given in the natural world to know when to prepare for sun or rain. Even in the 21st Century, the saying in the scripture above is paraphrased this way: Red sky at morning, sailors take warning; red sky at night, sailors' delight.
But Jesus isn't idly chatting about the weather with the Pharisees and Sadducees. He's chastising them for their inability to see, right before their eyes, the very manifestation of all the scriptures they claim to understand and interpret better than anyone else. Despite their immersion in the law and the prophets, they miss the Sign to which all are pointing. They, like the elite in our time, are so consumed by their prestige and power, they cannot accept that this no-name, itinerant preacher from Galilee, with His rag-tag followers, is the Messiah, the Son of the Living God, the One for whom they have been waiting.
Jesus IS the sign from heaven.
Like the blind Pharisees and Sadducees, do we fail to see Him?
Do we fail to see Him for who He truly is?
Do we fail to follow Him in obedient joy for the grace He has so lavishly poured out upon us?
Since of of us sin and fall short of God's glory, the answer to the questions posed above is a resounding YES. But when we confess our sins and run to Jesus, He will wrap us up in His arms of love and compassion, and forgive us those sins. He isn't a fair-weather friend, but a forever one. Rain or shine, we can rejoice because the Lord Jesus is with us.
Amen!
You said it well, Martha. In today's society there are so many clever know-it-all that do not see, and do not want to believe, that God is here; present every day in our lives.
ReplyDeleteThey may well rely on modern technology and science, yet do not wonder about the Creator of it all.
God bless you always.
You are spot on with this one, Victor. So much of technology falsely leads us to think that we can be self-reliant when it's the furthest thing from the truth. Yes, know-it-alls run rampant, don't they? But as you often discuss in your blog, God gave us free will to choose Him or ourselves.

Praise God for our "all weather friend" Jesus, Who is with us no matter what the storms of life may bring...and He is with us in the sunshine and beauty of spring and summer too. Oh, how wonderful it is to have Jesus as our true "SONshine!". Love this. We are supposed to get some more rain this week too. I pray it is so. We need it so much! Thank youj for this wonderful post!
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you, Pamela, for your wonderful comment here! Jesus is our eternal friend no matter what the weather. He is, as you stated, our SONshine always. I'll be praying that you get the rain you so badly need.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Good post, Martha. The Lord is sure; the weather, despite all of our technology to predict it, is not.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Glynn! Yes, God is steady and true always, and even with all our technology, we can still mess up when it comes to predicting the weather, that's for sure.

We here in Texas have gratefully enjoyed the temps. We are in the 70's and it feels so nice. My heart was saddened last week by a comment on a friends post indicating that they are not believers. In this world, I simply cannot imagine not knowing God the creator of All things. I see HIM in all things and this is my desire for ALL, to see God in all things.
ReplyDeleteI'll join you, Shug, in praying for those who don't believe in God and in Jesus' saving grace. I can't imagine living any other way, either. Know that I'm keeping Sam and you in prayer, too.

Thank you, Christine.

Honestly I can’t add anymore to all that you said - I agree and affirm!
ReplyDeleteAs I get older, it bothers me when someone complains about the weather. Why complain about something we have no control over - it’s fine to be disappointed if it rains on your parade but after that move on.For me it’s the dreaded heat of summer, that I am prone to complain and grumble. My husband always says, “It’s summer- it’s supposed to be hot” As for rain, I enjoy it too. It’s such a blessing and since we only get rain during a short rainy season, we really appreciate it after a 7 -8 months of no rain.
We’re in the 80’s now with wind. The once green grasses are turning their golden color and soon we’ll be inching toward the 105+ temperatures that I am trying to “appreciate “ 🥵
We humans want everything our way. When it’s all been said and done, Jesus will be our only “light” as the sun and moon will be past and no longer needed. Enjoy it now.
“thy days shall cease, but thy light shall not cease; for thou shall have no need for ever of the light of the sun, nor of the light of the moon, and of the stars.'' Revelation 21:23
I so appreciate your lengthy and thoughtful observation here today, Debby. Thank you! And yes, Jesus will always be our light who will guide us through any weather we may encounter along our earthly journey. Knowing that is true, we don't have any right to complain in the present moments.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Praise God, the Sun of Righteousness (Malachi 4:2) is always shining down on us! At the same time, our King's rule is refreshing like spring rain on freshly cut grass (Psalm 72:6 NLT). With God's weather in our spirits, we get both at the same time!
ReplyDeleteAmen to that, Nancy! Yes, the Son is always shining upon us.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Several thoughts entered my mind as I read this Martha. First, I don't complain about the weather because I can't change it. There is only ONE who can and I don't think He cares about all the griping and complaining. Second, I like it hot. Third, if people spent as much on their pursuit of Jesus as they do the weather app or following the weather we would have some very astute people of the Bible.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, Bill. If we would focus on the Son more than the sun, we would all be better off.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Amen. Jesus is not a fair-weather friend.
ReplyDeleteI'm so grateful that He is with us always, rain or shine, Diana.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
I agree with most everyone here. I am loving the weather here - it could stay this way all year long.
ReplyDeleteIt is so sad that the Pharisees and Sadducees missed Jesus. I am sure there are people today who miss too. I have always wondered if I lived back then what I would have done. I hope I would have seen, but it is much easier in hindsite vision.
Yep, hindsight is 20/20, Sandie. Would we have seen Jesus as our Messiah if we lived at that time? I sure hope that yes, we would, but that's something we can never know. Really doesn't matter as we believe in Him now.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Sometimes it's almost hard to believe how many things there are that we seem to share the same opinion about. In this case, it's the weather. Here in middle Tennessee, our weather patterns are probably not all that different from yours, and though we have those seasons and periods that challenge our comfort zone, we've learned to roll with the punches. Spending a few years in Alaska taught us that somethimes you just have to "suck it up and deal with it". :).
ReplyDeleteAnd on the more consequential side, you're spot on when you pointed out that Jesus was not interested in whether it was going to rain or not. He was pointing out the issue that had eternal implications for them, and those implications continue to confront us today. The enemy always wants us to focus on short term personal comfort and ignore the bigger picture and what the living God is doing in the spiritual realm all around us. I loved the lead-in and the wakeup call you wound up with. Thanks again for another bright spot in our day, and may God bless you and Danny with some upcoming days that make you want to smile for just being alive.
Your are so right, Ron, when you state that issues having eternal implications is what Jesus was trying to tell them, and is still telling us today. Rain or shine, may we always choose wisely each and every day, and be grateful for all our blessings.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
I join you in rejoicing that Jesus is with us. Can't make it a day without Him!
ReplyDeleteNor, could I, Barbara. I really don't see how anyone can.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Good post, Martha. The only sure thing in life is God's presence in it. He runs the show!
ReplyDeleteHe certainly does, Bill! He is our certainty in life, rain or shine.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Amen and what a blessing! Thank you for this, Martha!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Terri, for your kind comment here.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Yes I agree so well said, a damn good post
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jo-Anne, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

As a child I used to think adults who asked/talked about the weather were so boring ... except now, I've become one of them. (lol)
ReplyDeleteI so enjoyed your words today. Jesus is saying, "Please, just look at the big picture!".
May we all look at the big picture, Myra, instead of the little snippets. Isn't it ironic, too, that we've become the "boring" elders we once avoided? Great observation!
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Praise Him!
ReplyDeleteEach and every day, He deserves our praise, Christine.

Isn't it amazing how often we let the weather call the shots in our lives ...
ReplyDeleteToo many times, I'd say, Linda. Let's resolve to let Jesus call the shots.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
Hey Martha, our weather here in East TN is the same, cooler temps and they are welcomed in comparison to what things could be like and will be like before you know it. The Sadducees were "Sad-you-see" because they didn't know Jesus as Lord and Savior. I pray we all spread the gospel for others to see Jesus in us and the light of who He IS. May we never let any one or any-thing, not even ministry itself, cause us to miss Jesus. God bless!
ReplyDeleteOh, Karen, I'd never heard that interpretation of "Sad-you-see" before - it's a great one and perfect for expressing their inability to recognize the Messiah. And I'm glad you all are experiencing some cooler temps, too. Yes, we'll enjoy it for as long as it lasts.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
I love the rain! It is beautiful and much needed for the garden. We are so blessed to have the Lord! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAmen, Mrs. White! We are so blessed to have Jesus in our lives both sunny and rainy times.
DeleteGrace and blessings!
It is amazing how we are spoken to through everyday live. Good post.

Thanks for your kind words here, Jim. Yes, when we have ears to hear, God speaks to us daily and in so many subtle ways.

Such a great reminder that Jesus isn’t just with us in the sunny days but in the storms too. Rain or shine, He’s the one constant we can always count on. Amen! 🌦✝️
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your sweet comment here, Veronica! Yes, Jesus is with us through the sun and rain, the good times and the bad. He is our morning star!

Genesis 8:22: "Henceforth, all the days of the earth, seed [time] and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night, shall not cease". Among God's promises and He is in control.
ReplyDeleteIt's been amazingly sunny here for the last couple of months, and not much rain forecast. The solar panels are going bananas.
That's so unusual for the UK, isn't it? I do hope you are enjoying the sunshine, David. And yes, God has always been in control and will continue to be.

This gave me chills — the way you unfolded that moment from Matthew 16 and brought it right into our hearts and times.
ReplyDeleteYes, Jesus is the sign — not hidden, not vague, but present, clear, and full of grace. And how easily we still miss Him when our hearts grow distracted or proud.
Thank you for this beautiful call to see rightly — and to respond not with pride or distance, but with obedient joy.
Rain or shine, He truly is our forever Friend. 🌧️☀️✝️
My English blog is this one: https://preciousbeyond.blogspot.com/
