On Solid Ground

1 Corinthians 10:12
So, if you think your are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!

There is no sin in having confidence in our abilities or taking pride in our accomplishments. The problem arises when we become overly confident to the point of complacency or prideful to the exclusion of giving credit to God who has blessed us with our gifts and talents. While over-confidence and excessive pride create the temporary illusion that we are standing firm, those are the exact times when it's easiest to lose our footing, toppled by our own bravado and arrogance. Paul is warning the Corinthians that thinking they are on solid ground and actually being there are two vastly different entities; the first originates from the ways of man, and the second, from the ways of God. Clearly, he's advising them to conduct some serious self-examination in light of the faith they profess.

This remains wise counsel for us as Christians today, living with a whirlwind of worldly temptations swirling all around us. While I would venture to say that most of you reading this would readily confess to God being the center of your life, it doesn't hurt, now and again, to reassess your position and, if need be, pray yourself back into balance with Him. Don't just think you are standing firm, know it for a fact. Satan would love nothing better than for you or I to fall. Let's not give him the satisfaction! However, should you teeter on the brink and fall, know the Lord is right there to offer His hand and help you back onto your feet, placing you, once again, on His solid ground.

To remain or be humble is not easy but reminders are always a great way to get back on that path.
